The Geomodelling team of the Geological Survey of the Netherlands (GDN) has delivered the South Netherlands (ZuidNL) hydrogeological base model to a consortium of Limburg and Brabant parties. The model covers the provinces of Limburg and North Brabant, including the surrounding areas geohydrologically related to them. It is intended as a basis for groundwater modelling and brings together available hydrogeological insights in geometry and permeabilities.

It was quite a challenge to create a usable whole – without additional modelling – from all the available models with their different schematisations (REGIS II, ThermoGIS, DGMdiep, the Flemish H3Dv2, Walloon profiles, and German models and maps). An innovation is the qualitative classification of the hydraulic resistance of fractures. Knowledge of this is still lacking to create a good hydraulic parametrisation in REGIS II, a 3D layer model that represents the subsurface of the Netherlands up to approximately 500 metres below sea level.
