Geo-Information Technology research group
The Geo-Information Technology (GIT) research group provides the Geological Survey of the Netherlands (GDN) with its IT infrastructure and applications. GIT is also responsible for the technical and functional maintenance of the central storage of all subsurface data. We do this in collaboration with our colleagues in GeoData & Information Management (GDIM). This research group focuses mainly on the management of subsurface data.
High-quality subsurface data digitally available
GIT is responsible for the technical functions of GDN’s information services, such as our portals, web services, and applications. GIT’s main task is to translate data models and user requirements into system software. With this, we facilitate the process of the subsurface data information chain, from intake to delivery. The ultimate goal is to make high-quality subsurface data digitally available to public authorities, knowledge and educational institutions, businesses, and other stakeholders.
IT architecture, software development, and IT tooling
The applications developed by GIT comply with the wishes, requirements, and principles set out in GDN’s IT architecture. They match both internal and external user needs. Through innovative IT tooling and software development, GIT delivers data management solutions. We also manage the GDN portals BROloket, DINOloket, and NLOG, and ensure that GeoTOP is available in 3D.

Expertise and collaboration
The data expertise of GDIM and the IT expertise of GIT are the foundation of GDN’s other research groups. Together, we enable external parties and our colleagues to use GDN’s digital subsurface data and data facilities.
Our research and development focus includes the Geological Survey for Europe (GSEU) project. This research programme aims to create a European Geological Survey. As geology and hydrogeology do not respect national boundaries, it is important that subsurface data is well connected across national boundaries. We and the GDIM research group use our IT expertise for this purpose.
