Mozambique: a poor country rich in gas
Much of my work focuses on the geology of the Netherlands. However, a lot of geological knowledge gained here can also be applied elsewhere in the world. The knowledge required for making geological maps and models, for example. As I wrote before, the basis of a geological map is an overview of the layers (formations) present in the soil that researchers can map – a so-called stratigraphic nomenclator. We have had these in the Netherlands for many decades. First for the shallow subsurface and, when we started exploring for gas and oil, also for the deep subsurface. Mozambique is more recently undergoing a similar process. Read Geert-Jan Vis’ (Dutch) blog.
