The Netherlands’ landscape used to look very different from what it looks like today. And this is reflected in the subsurface we walk on every day. Geologist Tamara van de Ven brings this subsurface to the surface through boreholes. The data these boreholes provide are not only important for geologists, but also for municipalities and the private sector.

At the Geological Survey of the Netherlands (GDN), Tamara is working on mapping the Dutch subsurface. Where someone else may simply observe sand, clay, or peat, she uses what she sees today to reconstruct the landscape of the past. She explains (in Dutch) how this works in the blog ‘Drilling in the Dutch subsurface is of historical and economic importance’ on wetenschap.nu.
