A Seismic Hazard and Risk Analysis (SHRA) provides an expectation of future ground movements and the safety risk for residents in the Groningen area resulting gas production from the Groningen gas field. From 2021, the SHRA will be under public management. TNO has been commissioned by EZK to carry out the public SHRA for Groningen.

Public SHRA managed by TNO

The SHRA is an important part of the operational strategy that is determined for each gas year by EZK. Until 2020, NAM carried out the SHRA for Groningen known as ‘HRA’. The HRA 2020 was the last version. From 2021, this risk analysis will be carried out by an independent party for the first time. Read more about it on NLOG.

Groningen Model Chain

The Groningen Model Chain is a software tool. To carry out the public SHRA Groningen, TNO has implemented the Groningen Model Chain independently of NAM for application in the public domain. Using the Groningen Model Chain, the consequences of the gas production can be calculated for different production scenarios. Both the hazard and risk analyses use statistical methods that consider uncertainties related to limited knowledge and imperfections in both measurement data and models.

The Groningen Model Chain is displayed schematically on NLOG. The results of the SHRA 2021 can also be found on NLOG.
