From paper to 3D models: a timeline of 100 years of geology mapped out

Most people have seen a geological map, even if only the parchment-like piece of paper hanging between two broomsticks on our primary school’s wall. Such maps show areas of different colours against a background of the most important infrastructure, cities, and relief. But how are geological maps actually made? And why do new versions keep coming out, while the geology itself remains unchanged? Geert-Jan Vis discusses (in Dutch) this in this blog within the context of ‘100 years of geology mapped out’, which we celebrated in 2018 at the Geological Survey of the Netherlands (GDN), which is part of TNO.
