Public SHRA Groningen

SHRA stands for ‘Seismic Hazard and Risk Analysis’. The SHRA provides an expectation of future ground movements and the safety risk for residents in the Groningen earthquake area resulting from gas production from the Groningen gas field. The SHRA is an important part of the annual operational strategy set out by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK). Until 2020, NAM carried out the SHRA for Groningen, known as ‘HRA’. HRA 2020 was the last version. From 2021, the SHRA will publicly managed and will therefore be carried out under the title of ‘public SHRA Groningen’. TNO has been commissioned by EZK to carry out the public SHRA Groningen.

The Groningen Model Chain is a software tool. To carry out the public SHRA Groningen, TNO has implemented the Groningen Model Chain independently of NAM for application in the public domain. Using the Groningen Model Chain, the consequences of the gas production can be calculated for different production scenarios. Both the hazard and risk analyses use statistical methods that consider uncertainties related to limited knowledge and imperfections in both measurement data and models.

Where can I find more information?
