Addressing Methane Emissions: Challenges and Solutions
Methane emissions are receiving increasing attention due to their environmental impact and the recent 2024 European Methane Regulation. To promote collaboration and knowledge exchange, TNO Geological Survey of the Netherlands (TNO-GDN), NIOZ and SodM are organizing an international two-day symposium, bringing together global specialists from, amongst others, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Norway, The Netherlands, The United Kingdom and the USA.
The programme is ready!
Five key topics on methane emissions from the seabed of the North Sea, including leakage from abandoned gas wells, will be adressed. During the symposium, the following questions will be explored:
- Do methane emissions in the North Sea significantly contribute to the greenhouse effect?
- What do the latest scientific insights tell us?
- What are the implications for (European) policy, regulation and practice, in particular the Methane Regulation?
The Methane emissions in the North Sea Symposium provides a platform for scientific measurements, analysis and interpretation. Its aim is to determine the true scale of these emissions and how they can be addressed.
On 13 and 14 November, international experts will share their knowledge and insights on the sources, quantification and reduction of methane emissions. With attention to the latest European regulations, including the Methane Regulation, the symposium explores how we can map, understand and minimise methane emissions in the North Sea.
Five key topics and moderators:
- Origin and migration paths of methane – Rune Mattingsdal, Exploration geologist at the Norwegian Offshore Directorate (NOD/Sodir)
- Measuring methane – Simon Ivar Andersen, Research Director and Professor, Chemical Impact of Offshore Energy Production (DTU)
- Reactions in the water column – Charlotte Nørgaard Larsen, Programme Manager for the Abandonment Research Programme and the CO2 Storage Research Programme (DTU Offshore)
- Wells (integrity and leakage) – Eric van Oort, Professor (University Texas)
- Prevention and aftercare – Barend van Engelenburg, Research coordinator (SodM)
